driving in australia

Having your own car in Australia is a great way to get off the beaten path. It will allow you to get away from the constraints of the routes and schedules of other modes of transport. You will be able to drive in Australia if you are over 18 and have a valid driving license from your country of residence.
The roads in Australia are well maintained and cars drive on the left. Like the UK it is illegal to drive whilst on your mobile phone and you must wear your seat belt.

Some stretches of road in Australia's outback are very long and accidents from fatigue are common. If possible share the driving with someone else and take plenty of rest stops. Also watch out for 50-metre-long semi-trailers called road trains and kangaroos which have a habit of jumping out into the path of oncoming vehicles.

Speed limits
Country roads 100-110km/h.
Motorways (outside cities) 110km
Motorways (built up areas) 100km/h
Minor roads 50km/h or 60km/h
Certain areas of the Northern Territory No speed restrictions
