When planning your trip one thing that might not spring instantly
to mind is getting the right backpacker travel insurance cover
for your trip. Potential backpackers can often find shopping
for travel insurance a confusing and expensive process. With
so many different policies to choose from it can be difficult
to find the right one. Backpackers frequently have many questions
when it comes to travel insurance especially if they are a
first time backpacker. After all: How do you know that you
are getting a good deal? What is the right level of cover?
Do you really need insurance?
|
These price are a good
starting point, but shop around when you are planning your trip,
don't pay more than £300 for backpacker travel insurance,
there are lots of good policies available for less.
Backpacker travel insurance is not the same as annual holiday
insurance, this is mistake many young travelers make when purchasing
insurance. Annual holiday insurance is designed for your average
holiday maker, who goes abroad a couple of times a year usually
for a week or two at a time, and spends most of their time relaxing
on the beach. This is very different to the habits of your average
backpacker, if there is such a thing as an average backpacker.
If you are planning on travelling for long periods of time annual
holiday insurance usually doesn't cover your stay out of the
country for more than a few weeks at a time.
It is hardly surprising that backpackers are more likely to
suffer an accident than your average holidaymaker, when you
think of the activities often undertaken including adventure
sports, moped riding and excessive drinking. This doesn't mean
that you shouldn't enjoy yourself just make sure you are covered
just in case.
A good tip when deciding what level of cover you need, is to
sit down and think of all the activitiesthat you are likely
to want to experience during your trip, and make sure these
are included in the policy before you purchase it. This is important
as it can often be more expensive to add activities to your
policy when you are travelling. If you are intending to work
whilst backpacking make sure your policy covers you to do so.
There might be restrictions as to the type of work you can under
take, (e.g. no heavy machinery, chainsaws, etc). Do you really
need backpacking insurance? This year around 400,000 18-24 year
old backpackers will leave the UK, of those 1 in 3 will do so
without travel insurance. Medical cost can quickly spiral out
of control considering air ambulances alone may cost more than
£15,000; it is very easy to rack up medical bills well
in excess of £50,000. This means that over 130,000 family
home
s could be at risk this year as parents allow their children
to travel without sufficient travel insurance. Quite a risk
when considering you can purchase a good level of cover for
less than a pound a day.
Choosing the right backpacker travel insurance for you doesn't
have to be complicated, just remember to check:
Your policy covers you to work if you are planning to do so.
Many policies don't cover you for injuries that occur whilst
working.
Ensure that the policy covers all activities that you are likely
to undertake on your trip, it can often be expensive to add
them whilst travelling.
A good premium insurance policy, will cover all your activities
without many add on costs, as these can prove very expensive.
Don't pay more than around £300/€400 for 12 months
backpacker travel insurance.
