tax file number

Sorting out your tax file number is one of the first things you will need to do before you start working in Australia, as most employers require that you provide them with your Australian tax file number before you start work. If you don't, you may be paying more tax than necessary. As long as you have a tax file number, your wages will be taxed at the much lower rate (29%). If you start work before you get one, don't worry - you have 28 days in which to obtain it.

Obtaining an Australian tax file number isn't difficult. You need to go to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) (which can be found in all the major cities) and complete the relevant forms, you will also be required to produce a current form of identification. i.e. Passport, driving licence.

You can sort out your tax file number before you leave home, giving you one less thing to do once you reach Australia. When applying for your tax file number online, the tax file registration system will then compare your details with those which are held on the DIMIA systems (from your working holiday visa application).
