tax file number

Sorting out your tax file number is one of the first things you will need to do before you start working in Australia, as most employers require that you provide them with your Australian tax file number before you start work. If you don't you will be taxed at the ‘emergency tax’ rate of around 48.5%. As long as you have a tax file number, your wages will be taxed at the much lower rate (29%). If you start work before you get one, don't worry - you have 28 days in which to obtain it.

Obtaining an Australian tax file number isn't difficult. You need to go to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) (which can be found in all the major cities) and complete the relevant forms, you will also be required to produce a current form of identification. i.e. Passport, driving licence.

You need to enter Australia before you can apply for a Tax File Number. This is because the Australian Tax Office will need to verify your identity first. Your identity is verified when you pass through Australian Immigration and your passport is checked and scanned.

You can arrange your Tax File Number in advance online, giving you one less thing to do once you reach Australia. Go Workabout have their systems set up so that your Tax File Number application is processed automatically as soon as you enter the country. They will then email your Tax File Number to you as soon as it is issued (usually around 10 days after your arrival in Australia).
